A Semiotic Analysis of Lahu Gourd Totem Imagery

Abstract:Fromasmioticperspective,gourdpaternsvividlyreflctteichculuralhritageandemotionalatachmentofheLau people.IntheLahucreationepic Mupa Mipa,gourdsareimbuedwithlife-giving powerandserveasthecradleofhumanity.Thus,the gourdhasbecomeaspiritualtotemoftheLahupeople,andthissymbolsystematicallyshowcasestheirbeliefsandspiritualpursuits.The gourdtotemalsobearsmultiplefunctionseconomic,social,andcultural.Theseinterwovenfunctionsjointlyconstitutetheeseceand coreofLauculture.Thegourdtotemhasundergonevariationsandinovationsacrossdifrenthistoricalperiods.Eachvariationand innovation of the gourd totem servesas powerful proof that Lahu culture evolves with thetimes and rejuvenates itself.
