A Semiotic Analysis of Lahu Gourd Totem Imagery

Abstract：Fromasmioticperspective，gourdpaternsvividlyreflctteichculuralhritageandemotionalatachmentofheLau people.IntheLahucreationepic Mupa Mipa，gourdsareimbuedwithlife-giving powerandserveasthecradleofhumanity.Thus，the gourdhasbecomeaspiritualtotemoftheLahupeople，andthissymbolsystematicallyshowcasestheirbeliefsandspiritualpursuits.The gourdtotemalsobearsmultiplefunctionseconomic，social，andcultural.Theseinterwovenfunctionsjointlyconstitutetheeseceand coreofLauculture.Thegourdtotemhasundergonevariationsandinovationsacrossdifrenthistoricalperiods.Eachvariationand innovation of the gourd totem servesas powerful proof that Lahu culture evolves with thetimes and rejuvenates itself.
