Effects of different pumpkin rootstocks on the growth, development and fruit quality of medium-size grafted watermelon in autumn

Abstract:To screensuitable pumpkinrootstocks for medium-size grafted watermelon inautumn,nine hybrid pumpkin rootstocks and twocommercialrootstocks(Fengle Jinjiaand Jingxin Zhen No.4)were evaluated using Meidu watermelonas the scion.Two commercial pumpkin rootstocks(H10and H11)and self-rooted seedlings(H12)wereused as control.This study investigated theeffectsofdierentpumpkinrootstockson grafting compatibilityseedling growth,field adaptability,yield,andfruitqualityofwatermelonTheresultsindicatedthatalltestedrootstocksexhibitedhighcopatibility with watermelon. Grafted seedlingsdemonstrated superiorquality,growth vigor and yield compared to self-rooted seedlings.H1,H2,H7,H8,ndH9soedbetteryield;H2,H6,H7,H8,ndH9eibitedsuperiorintrsicfritalit compared to thecommercialrootstocks.Through principal componentand membership functionanalysis of21key indicators,rootstocksH9,H7,andH8werecomprehensivelyevaluatedassuperiortoFengle JinjiaandJingxin ZhenNo.4in terms of seeding strength index,yield,soluble solids content and sensory evaluation score,increasing yield by 20.45%-27.98% compared to self-rooted plants.These pumpkin rootstocks are recommended as suitable options for medium-size grafted watermeloncultivation inautumn,particularly inecological zones with conditions similarto those of Hubei province.
