An Exploration of Wang Yangming' s Theory on “Cheng"

Abstract：TheoriginalmeaningoftheChinesecharacter“cheng”istruthandreality.For Wang Yangming，“cheng”hasmultiple connotations，includingsinceritygenuinenessandtheprincipleofnature.Theideaof“chengoriginatedfromConfucius’thoghtof “sincerityandrustworthiness.Si-MengScholfurtherestablishedtwoframeworksinTheDoctrineoftheMean：theunityofmanand natureandtheunityofiersagehodandouterkingship.ThetwowerelaterinheritedbyWangYangming，whoincorporated“cheng"into hismindlangsst，igitverticalliniyfhumansdedotalliniyfiesgeddter kingship.Indoingso“cheng”becameinterwovenwiththethrecorepropositionsofhisphilosophy“themindistheprinciple”，“the unityofknowledgeandaction”，and“theextensionofinateknowledge”.Regardingtheformer，WangYangmingcritizedZhu Xi's theoryf“investigatingthingstoacquirekowedge”forlackingaguidingprinciple，therebyestablishingtheiportanceofsincerityin intention”.Subsequently，through“cheng”heachievedatransformationfromtheexternaltotheinternal，makingitamediumfor communicating between theoriginalmind（inate knowledge）ofmanandtheprinciplesof nature，thusmakingthepropositionthatthe mindisthprincipletnable.In“teuityfknowledgeandactio”，nowledgereferstoiatekowledge，actionreferstotesio of inateknowledge，andthesubjectof“cheng”isinnateknowledge.Inthiscase，thetwocanbeunited.Developmentisrflectedin “cheng”beingreframedtoamoraldrivingonceptofindleaingbecomingnsentialcharacteristicofteinnatekowldgeetity and ultimately evolving into the doctrine of extending innate knowledge.
