A Comparative Study of “Loyalty and Filial Piety” Between China and Japan

Abstract:ChinaandJapan，bothbelonging totheConfucianculturalcircle，havesimilariesanddiferencesin“l(fā)oyaltyandfilial piety".Troughanoverviewoftheorigins，historicalevolutionandbasicfeaturesofloyaltyandflialpiety”inChinaandJapanhis papermakesacomparativesudyftesilaritisaddiferencesbetwenthetwocountries，ndtriestofindtheuderlyingausesf te diffrences.Teconcptof“flialpety”inCinaoriginatedinthematriahalclansocietyandasgraduallevolvedfromthadoal filialpietyintomodeo.Comparedwith“flialpiety”，theoneptofloyaltymegedlateanditsstatusasn’tgotfurthpoed untilthe SongandMingdynasties.Theconceptof“oyaltyandflialpiety”graduallyshowedthebasicfeaturesof“servingone’sparents well，andcherishinglife”and“transferingfilialpietytoloyalty，andupholdingone’saspirationsandestablishingoneselfwith determination”.Theconceptof“l(fā)oyaltyndfilialpiety”inJapanwasevoledfromChina,andbcamethemostimportantpartofJapanese cultureinthecourseofhistory，withthefeaturesof“priorizingloyaltyoverfilialpiety”and“emphasizingrepayingone‘sdebtsof gratitude”.Throughcomparison，itcanbefoundthatbothChinaandJapanatachimportancetotheoleof“l(fā)oyaltyandfilialpiety”，but due totheinfluenceofhistoricalenvironment，socialstructure，andculturaltradion，Chinavalues“filialpiety”whileJapanvalues “l(fā)oyalty".Comparingthediferencesintheconceptsof“l(fā)oyaltyandflialpiety”betweenChinaandJapanhelpstodeepenthe understanding of the two cultures and avert cultural misunderstandings and conflicts.
