A Study on the Images of Plants in the Nirvana Sutra Illustration in Cave 127 at the Maijishan Grottoes

Abstract：A muralof the Nirvana sutra is depictedon the upper partof the northern wallincave127at the Maijishan Grotoes.Althoughthemuralsatthissitehavealreadybeenresearchedextensivelyovertheyears，lessatentionhasbeenpaidto theimagesofplantsintheilustrations.Bymakinguseofdigitalimageryandthelinedrawingsof themurals，thispaperpresents ananalysisoftheatisticstylesandteologicalconotationsoftreeplantspeciesdepictedintemural，amelyoplartres， weping wilows，andatypeof tree with fan-shaped leaves.The methodologyofthe studyuses an iconographical method that comparestheartisticstylesofthepaintingsbycreatingagraph in whichtheverticalaxisstands forthestylesofdifferent historicalperiodsfromthepre-QinperiodtotheNorthernZhoudynasty，whilethehorizontalaxisstandsfortheartisticstylesof diferentregios.Theresultsindicate thattheplantimages inthisilustrationweredirectlyinfluencedbysimilarpaitings from theCentral Plains cultureofthe Heluoarea during thelateNorthern Wei dynasty，andthatthethemesandtechniques can be traced even further back to the art of the Eastern Jin and early Southern Dynasties periods.
