Abstract:Manyoftheextantimagesandhistoricalrecords from the Tibetanperiodhighlighttheimportanceofthethemeof theOneBuddhaandEightBodhisattasintheartoftheDunhuangregion.Cave25attheYulinGrotoeswasbuiltandpainted duringthe TibetanoccupationofDunhuangandincludes thisverythemeonthebackwallaswellasclearlywrittenname inscriptios,which alsoproveuseful forunderstanding similarrock carvings in eastern Tibet.Advancing researchonrock inscriptionsatthesamesitealsoprovidesanewperspectiveforre-examining themurals inCave25.Afterconductingastudyon thereligious contextofthesecases,thispaperhasconcludedthat theimagesoftheEightBodhisatvasshouldnotbeinterpreted simplybyquoting Astamandalaka-sutra; rather,itsreligiousimplicationsare morecloselyasociatedwithboth Huayan華嚴(yán)and Western PureLandbeliefs,as expounded inBhadracarypranidana.Thisscriptural backgroundoughttobetakenintoacount whenseekingtounderstand the religiousritualsand functionsoftheartwork.
