一AReexamination of the Eight Bodhisattvas

Abstract：Manyoftheextantimagesandhistoricalrecords from the Tibetanperiodhighlighttheimportanceofthethemeof theOneBuddhaandEightBodhisattasintheartoftheDunhuangregion.Cave25attheYulinGrotoeswasbuiltandpainted duringthe TibetanoccupationofDunhuangandincludes thisverythemeonthebackwallaswellasclearlywrittenname inscriptios，which alsoproveuseful forunderstanding similarrock carvings in eastern Tibet.Advancing researchonrock inscriptionsatthesamesitealsoprovidesanewperspectiveforre-examining themurals inCave25.Afterconductingastudyon thereligious contextofthesecases，thispaperhasconcludedthat theimagesoftheEightBodhisatvasshouldnotbeinterpreted simplybyquoting Astamandalaka-sutra; rather，itsreligiousimplicationsare morecloselyasociatedwithboth Huayan華嚴(yán)and Western PureLandbeliefs，as expounded inBhadracarypranidana.Thisscriptural backgroundoughttobetakenintoacount whenseekingtounderstand the religiousritualsand functionsoftheartwork.
