A Preliminary Study on the Qiuci Style Murals in the Newly Discovered Huahongdong Grottoes in Minle County， Gansu Province

Abstract：The Huahongdong Grotoes sitein Minle County，Gansu Province，recentlydiscovered in2O23，wasasmallgroup ofcaves.Amuralpaintedinhorizontalbandsonthenorthwallicave2ofthesouthernareashowsasceneoftheBudhadeliveringasermonflanked byattendant bodhisatvas.Imagesof Buddha flanked byanatendant groupofbodhisattvas are highly similartodepictions ofotherthemesinthereligiousartofQiuci （today knownasKucha）intermsoffacialexpresions，gestures andoverallpaintingtechniques.Forexample，thedecorativepatternofawildgoseholdingaring initsbeak inaBuddha'saureoleincave2oftheHuahongdongGrottes isnearlyidenticaltosimilarpatersintheBudda'saureoleincavel23oftheKizil Grotoes，particularlyintheirorientation，composition，andcoloring.Thetwopaintings mightevenhavebeenderivedfromthe same mastercopy.Though some uniquedecorative pattersatthisite evinceaninfluence fromthelocal Hexiregions andother elements，theQiucistyledominatesonthewhole，whichindicates thattheabovementionedpaternwaslikelydirectlyinfluenced by Qiuci art.Itcanthereforebespeculatedthat thedate ofconstruction for both thecaves andthe muralsat the Huahongdong Grotoes wasaround the8thcentury.Themurals in theHuahongdong Grotoes were eithercreatedonamastercopy fromtheQiuci caves，or by artisans from the Qiuci of the Western Regions.

2023年4月，張掖市文物保護(hù)研究所會(huì)同民樂縣文體廣電和旅游局進(jìn)行文物安全巡查時(shí)，根據(jù)民樂縣當(dāng)?shù)卮迕裉峁┑男畔?，?duì)南古鎮(zhèn)岔家堡村新發(fā)現(xiàn)的一處石窟群進(jìn)行了初步調(diào)查，并發(fā)表了調(diào)查簡報(bào)（下稱《簡報(bào)》）[1]，將新發(fā)現(xiàn)的窟群暫劃為 A，B，C 三個(gè)區(qū)域，初步推測(cè)A區(qū)洞窟的年代在5—6世紀(jì)之間。（剩余9078字）
