Abstract：Thearchives fromS.F.Oldenburg's expedition tonorthwest Chinahaveyettobefulypublicized.Basedonthe materialsavailableinthe St.PetersburgBranchoftheRussianAcademyofSciences，however，thispaperclarifieshowthe archivesof theexpeditioncametobehoused intheRussianAcademyelucidatestheimportantvalueofOldenburg'sreports fromhisDunhuang expedition，andtracesthearchivesthrough historyastheypassedamong majorarchivecenters，museums， andresearch institutesinSt.Petersburg.Thisstudymarksthefirsttimethatsomeofthelinedrawingsandphotosofthemurals taken during Oldenburg's Dunhuang expedition and kept inthe St.Petersburg archives have ever been published.
