Abstract:The Uighur period caves at the Kumtura Grotoes inheritedthe formoftheirconstruction from Anxi during the Tangdynastywhichitselfwasareconstructionofthecentral-pilaredcavesmadeintheformerQiuci style.However,inthese caves,rows of standing Buddhas and Bodhisattvasare depictedonthe wallsofthecorrdors in placeof the narative nirvana illustrationscommontotraditionalQiucicaves.Inadition,the Uighurpaintersincoporatedvariousnarativeelementstotheir paintingsbydepictingdiferentfiguresfromthestoriestradionallyused intheQiucistylebelowtherowsofBuddhasand Bodhisatvas.Althoughacertainamountofdislocationappears intheplotsasaresultofthecombinationoftraditional storiesand newimages,thecontentwasbynomeanschosenatrandom.Infact,thenewfigures weredeliberatelychosen fromthestoriesof
Pranidhanaand paintedbelowtheimagessoastoinspireBuddhistpractitionersacording totheprinciplesoutlinedinthe texts.
