Abstract：Theprocessoffood preparationisofteneasilyaestheticized，overshadowingits inherent natureas“l(fā)abor”. Whilethe fluent demonstrationofcookingskills showcases theaestheticsof movement，itsimultaneouslyobscures the physicalexertionandmentalfatigueexperiencedbythelaborers.InGeLiang'sYanShiJi，fodanditsassociatedlabor arecharacterizedbydistinctrepetitiveness.Within therepetitive textual structureand temporal framework，thefood producers inthenoveldevelopaformofrationalized“self-deprivation”throughthe interplayofrepetitivelaborand its intermittentvariations.Building uponthis，therepetitive laborsurrounding food intensifies the“deprivation”hierarchical relationship betweenthelower and upperclasses，and extends togenderand family dynamicsthrough theconnection betweenidentityandfood.Correspondingtoculinarylabor，theimitationofculinarytastesandtheidentityconstruction achievedthrough suchimitationreflect thehierarchical nature inherentinfoodconsumption.Furthermore，asacultural carrierfundamentalllinkedtoidentity，foodconsumptioncan，inspecifichistoricalperiods，catalyzeforcesofcultural and political identification.
