Arts and crafts is a major category in the study of art history， but compared to painting and sculpture， etc. it can be said to have been obscure in early art historical studies. It was not until the nineteenth century， when Riegel devoted his treatise on it in The Question of Style， The Arts and Crafts of Late Rome， that its status was compared to that of painting and sculpture， etc. This paper attempts to sort out Riegel’s rediscovery of the Arts and Crafts， concluding that Riegel’s focus on the Arts and Crafts was influenced by the archaeologists of his time and that his rediscovery of the Arts and Crafts was closely related to nineteenth-century archaeology.
