Constructing ‘Truth'Amidst‘Chaos’: Formation Mechanisms of Conspiracy Beliefs in Media Exposure

Abstract:Based on media construct theory,therelationship between exposure to differenttypes of media and individualbelief inconspiracytheories was exploredthroughthePLS-SEMmethod.Itwas foundthatmainstreammedia exposure had asignificant negativerelationship withconspiracy beliefs,while social media exposure hadasignificant positive relationship with conspiracy beliefs;individual Anomia played a significant mediating role in the relationshipbetweenmediaexposureandconspiracybeliefs;inaddition,individualsneedforcognitiveclosureplayeda moderatingrole,andthehighertheneedforcognitiveclosure,the morepronouncedtheconspiracybeliefstriggeredbythe anomia,and thelower theroleofcommercialnewssiteexposure insuppresinganomiaandthehigher theroleofocial mediaexposure inincreasing it.This study providesanew perspectiveonhow media exposureaffectsindividualbeliefin conspiracy theories based onpsychologicalandcognitive dimensions,andalso provides alocalized explanationof thefactorsafecting individual belief inconspiracy theories inthe Chinese context,providinganew theoretical and practical basis for subsequent conspiracy theory regulation research.
