Semantic Evolution and Grammaticalization of “Fule' ZHANG Hongguo，HUANG Yufeng

Abstract： This study explores the semantic evolution and grammaticalization of“Fule” from a diachronic perspective. Initially，“ Fule” was composed of the verb“Fu” and the perspective aspect marker“Le”， expressing the meaning of“swallowing” and“obeying"， which belongs to the acting domain. Subsequently，its syntactic position was shifted to the end of sentence，serving as a predicate or a resultative complement， expressng “agreement，recognition"，and then generalized into negative meanings negative connotations such as“helplessness” and“dissatisfaction”，which belongs to the knowing domain. Finally，“Fule” was used as a discourse marker， expressing one's personal attitude. The study further discusses the grammaticalization motivations and mechanisms of“Fule”，including generalization and subjectification of semantic evolution， grammatical functions， the language economy principle， and disyllablization.
