Abstract： The breeding of apple varieties in China began in the 195Os，and by 2025，a total of 794 varieties have been bred in 7O years.It is one of the main fruit tree varieties with a high market share of self-owned intellctual property rights. 7O year progress of apple variety breeding were reviewed， the characteristics of the bred varieties were summarized， including maturity period， fruit skin and flesh color， the uses and breeding methods of the varieties were analyzed， and the intellctual property protection （plant variety rights） and registration/approval status of the varieties were summarized， as well as the main units involved in variety breeding. Cultivating diversified utilization and labor-saving cultivation varieties is the direction of future apple breeding，and promoting the transformation of traditional breeding methods towards molecular breeding is also a future development trend.
