Abstract:The dietary shifts of fish are an important indicator reflecting ecosystem impacts. This study focused on two dominant species in Lake Chao, the topmouth culter (Culter alburnus) and the Taihu lake anchovy (Coilia nasus taihuensis),systematically analyzing their food composition and seasonal variation patterns. By examining gut contents and combining them with data on prey abundance in the water, the study revealed the dietary variation trends and ecological adaptation mechanisms of these two fish species. The results showed significant seasonal differences in their diets. Culter alburnus primarily preyed on fish year-round,with the broadest diet in summer, while the Coilia nasus taihuensis exhibited distinct seasonal dietary shifts, including cannibalism during summer.
