Title: The Arbitrariness of Symbol and the Motivation or Power Relations in Translation
Abstract: The arbitrariness and rationality of symbolic meaning are two different semiotic concepts, and in Saussure's semiotic thought, arbitrariness is the first principle of symbols. Starting from the arbitrariness of symbols, a series of characteristics of symbols are triggered; At the same time, because language, as a special type of symbol, embodies many characteristics of symbols, the development of linguistics is more mature than semiotics. Although symbol has arbitrary meaning, it has motivation in the translation process. Moreover, the arbitrariness of symbol meaning inevitably implies discourse power relations in symbol translation activities, which could provide new references and ideas for the communication of Chinese and foreign cultures.
Key words:arbitrariness; motivation; power relations; translation semiotics; semiotics
