Title： Coleridge and Balanced Conservatism， with a Focus on A Lay Sermon

Abstract： Labelling Coleridge's political view and cultural identity as “conservatism” misinterprets this very term， and neglects the uniqueness of his conservative idea. This article focuses on A Lay Serman and attmpts to shed new light on Coleridgean conservatism in terms of its motivation，blueprint， and ideal of equipoise.This article argues that Coleridge's conservatism indicates a stance posed for a specific target， namely“an overbalance of the commercial spirit"and its political economic ideology. His conservatism is also a process that tends towards a balance between the old and the new， which is epitomized by his“clerisy” plan proposed to remedy the cultural and moral deficiency of the political economy. The delicate balance embodied by Coleridge's conservatism mirrors the “bland equipoise” followed by the Church of England in its transition from church-state unity to alliance，and echoes Britain's conservative responses to change in the long nineteenth century.
