Abstract:TheSeaand theMirrorisanimportant work in thetransitionalperiodofW.H.Auden'sartisticoutlook, and stands as arepresentative example of his contemporary ironic practice.Audenuses techniques such as building intertextual relationships,concealing hisown linguistic style,andconstructinga polyphonic dialogical feld,Auden achievesarhetoricalefectof ironyintheverse drama.Drawing from Kierkegaard'sexistential irony,Audenargues thatonlythrough thedialecticof "self-negation"can theauthor embodyanartistic vision thatreveals truth without transmitting dogmatic certainty.Byanalyzing Auden's encounter with the poetics of irony in thepoems and plays,we can highlight Auden's rethinking of the question of the poet's identity and his re-examinatio of the dispute between "intervention"and"self-discipline"inart sincethetwentiethcentury.Inthis way,itcanprovidenewideas forclarifying the intellectual continuity across Auden's transitional creative phases.
